Even if the Sims is a bestseller, the game is still not for everybody. Maybe cause some people don't see it as a game. This is cause the game leaked a clear goal, leaving it up to the players to decide the objectives. Which is why some don't call the Sims a game, but a toy.
But, the Sims was so successful among the non gamers mostly because of it's openness.
If you have a good imagination and are willing to experiment the game, then you will surely like the Sims. Which is even more so for the Sims 2 than it was for the original.
It must have been hard to make a sequel to the original bestseller, because everybody is expecting so much from it. If Maxis tinkered too far away from the original, it could lead to breaking the formula that made the original, but some improvements had to be made, and they choose the right subjects to improve.
After so many years of working on the game, they significally improved the game over the previous version, such as fixing the bugs, more exciting gameplay, fixing all the problems the previous version had and ofcourse a graphical upgrade of the game. The sequel isn't a fine-tuned version compared to the first one, it's a whole new game!
The change you will notice the most is the great improvement of it's visual quality. Everything from the Sims themselves to the objects they can collect are nicely and intricately rendered. What you will also notice, is the various animations characters can express, which gives the game a very real look. Many of the animations also depend on the character's personality.
The new sequel still may not satisfy all players, but it's a great improvement of the original game for sure.
